Chain 03:09
Chain Gentle breezes touch you the sun is shining high. Laugh and cry together and you’ve made a friend for life. Forge the links of friendship through sacrifice and pain. Join the links together the bonding of the chain. Everybody wants someone to hold. Everybody wants someone to hold. Everybody wants someone to hold. Everybody wants someone to hold. Feel the winds start blowing a change is on the way. But friends are friends forever even if they’re far away. All the years of growing sharing love and pain. Seeing each for what you are the stronger is the chain. Everybody wants someone to hold. Everybody wants someone to hold. Everybody wants someone to hold. Everybody wants someone to hold. Gentle breezes touch you the sun is shining high. Laugh and cry together and you’ve made a friend for life.

2 Sides To The Story There’s always 2 sides to the story 2 stories of pain. In all this time of living it’s always the same. Why don’t we learn? Why don’t we learn to take a problem and fix it with our minds? Look for a solution and stop just wasting time. Bleeding hearts are broken in despair. Try to make a difference dependence on ourselves. Stuck in a dilemma breaking all the rules. Bleeding hearts are broken everywhere. There’s always 2 sides to the story 2 stories of pain. Feeling all the anguish it’s happened again. Why don’t we learn? Why don’t we learn to think and talk through problems that appear? Answers don’t come easy learn to ease the fear. Bleeding hearts are making some repair. There’s always 2 sides to the story 2 stories of pain. In all this time of living it’s always the same. Breaking down the barrier. Soak up the pain. Ease the fear of living. Start living again. There’s always 2 sides to the story. There’s always 2 sides to the story. There’s always 2 sides to the story. There’s always 2 sides to the story. Why don’t we learn?

Small Points 03:16
Small Points There’s something wrong but she won’t tell. She’s got no voice, nor sight, nor smell. She’s insecure - wants to keep to herself. She’s got no soul, nor debt, nor wealth. She makes me feel so small, Like nothing at all. She’s feeling down, empty inside. She’s got no love, nor hope, nor pride. She runs away, starts blaming me. She’s got no care, not safe, nor free. She makes me feel so small, Like nothing at all. I try to reach out But she starts to shout… Get away, go on, get out of my sight. All alone, leave me here. Turn out the light. Run away, leave me alone. Throw a plate, pots and pans, smash the place up. Anger out, let off steam, but leave me a cup. Kettle boils, throwing a stone… I see her now lying alone. She’s got no blood, nor flesh, nor bone. Her skin is taut, stretched and bent. She’s got no thought - don’t know what she meant. She makes me feel so small, Like nothing at all. She’s sleeping deep, merged with death. She’s got no lungs - can’t take a breath. Running away I’m looking beat. I’ve got no legs, nor hands, nor feet. She makes me feel so small, Like nothing at all. There’s something wrong, so very much. We’ve got no voice - we’re out of touch…

Don’t Cry, Sophie, Cry Sophie don’t get on with her mother Sophie won’t talk with her dad. She just wants love, yeah! She don’t want to feel too bad. Sophie’s friends are her family. Sophie’s friends are there. She just goes home to sleep now but there, nobody cares. Cry, Soph. Don’t cry. Don’t cry, Sophie, cry. Cry, Soph. Don’t cry. Don’t cry, Sophie, cry. Sophie’s boy is her lover. Sophie’s boy is her man. She just wants to go on loving but he don’t understand. Cry, Soph. Don’t cry. Don’t cry, Sophie, cry. Cry, Soph. Don’t cry. Don’t cry, Sophie, cry. Sophie’s done everything. Sophie has been true. She just wants love, yeah! But can’t help feeling blue. Sophie’s had enough of her lover. Sophie’s trying hard to survive. Putting all her past behind her. Living a day to day life. Hello, Soph. Good bye. Good bye, Sophie, hi. Hello, Soph. Good bye. Good bye, Sophie, hi. Sophie don’t get on with her mother Sophie won’t talk with her dad. She just wants love, yeah! She don’t want to feel too bad. Cry, Soph. Don’t cry. Don’t cry, Sophie, cry. Cry, Soph. Don’t cry. Lingering 04:17
Lingering Babe, I’m kicking the ground, stumbling around I don’t know where I am. Babe, I’m asking you why you left me dry? I don’t understand. Just like a dream you’ve gone but the memory lingers on. When I think of the times we’d blown our minds with the songs we heard. It was so long ago and we’ve nothing to show, it seems so absurd. Just like a dream it’s gone but the memory lingers on. Dream baby, scream baby, run away. Talk with me, walk with me What can I say today? Shake my life, take my life, break me. Talk with me, walk with me. Take me on your way. Just like a dream you’ve gone but the memory lingers on. The songs may remain but I’m not the same as I used to be. I’ve looked back to then and I wonder again how I could not see. Just like a dream it’s gone but the memory lingers on. Dream baby, scream baby, run away. Talk with me, walk with me What can I say today? Shake my life, take my life, break me. Talk with me, walk with me. Take me on your way.

The Sun Is Crying The sun is crying, I’m feeling old. The sun is crying, I am so cold. The sun is crying… Where is the warmth? Where is the heart? Where is the soul? The sun is crying. The sun is crying. A star is falling, I cannot see. A star is falling, it couldn’t be. A star is falling… Where is the warmth? Where is the heart? Where is the soul? A star is falling. A star is falling. The earth is crumbling, it’s all around. The earth is crumbling, it is not sound. The earth is crumbling… Where is the warmth? Where is the heart? Where is the soul? The earth is crumbling. The earth is crumbling. A river’s running, it’s running dry. A river’s running, who am I? A river’s running… Where is the warmth? Where is the heart? Where is the soul? A river’s running. A river’s running A child is laughing, it fills the air. A child is laughing, the world can share. A child is laughing… Here is the warmth. Here is the heart. Here is the soul. A child is laughing. A child is laughing. A child is laughing. A child is laughing. A child is laughing. A child is laughing. Yeah!

Something Comes Along See clearly and hear just walk and talk to me clearly. I’m free but… Something comes along, takes you by surprise. Looking straight ahead through blind eyes. Something comes along to change the state of play. You keep going on. What can you say? Run, run away. Run far away. Someone comes along and takes a look at you. You just turn your face. What can you do? Someone comes along and takes your breath away. You turn your back, don’t want to play. See clearly and hear just walk and talk to me clearly. I’m free, don’t run away, don’t run far away. Take time, time to stay. Time, time to play. See clearly and hear just walk and talk to me clearly. I’m free but… Something comes along, takes you by surprise. Looking straight ahead open your eyes. Something comes along to change the state of play. Keep up going on. What will you say? Run, run away. Run far away. Someone comes along and likes the look of you. You could turn your face, what will you do? Someone comes along and takes your breath away. You could turn your back, but could you play? Run, run away. Run far away. It’s time, time to stay. It’s time, time to play.

Moving On 02:18
Moving On There’s a new dawn slowly breaking and I’m shaking in my feet. I can see a life ahead now, out of bed now hit the street. Feeling nervous see the sunrise have a fun-size bite to eat. Through the front door I am going and I’m knowing life’s the beat. I’m moving on, moving out. Living on without a doubt. I’m moving on, moving out. Have to live, have to find out. There’s a new dawn slowly breaking and I’m waking up my mind. I can see a life ahead now, out of bed now it’s the time. For the first time see the sunrise, open my eyes. Feeling fine. Through the front door I am going, to and froing down the line. I’m moving on, moving out. Living on without a doubt. I’m moving on, moving out. Have to live, have to find out. I’m moving on, moving out. Living on without a doubt. I’m moving on, moving out. Have to live, have to find out For myself.

I am [Persona II] I’m basically honest yet a consummate liar I have emotions too I am sensitive to the needs of others I can be callous too I understand I am Misunderstood I am I have strength inside I am strong in mind I can control too I am safe secure I am lost and found I can have anger too I understand I am Misunderstood I am It’s time to change my view I want to live I do I’m basically honest you’re a consummate shit Don’t want to be with you I’m an escapee from your grubby life There’s nothing you can do You’ve done so much to minimise My role in life to date You’ve kept me down imprisoned me But you’re not worth the hate I understand I’m sure Misunderstood No more I’ve made the change for me I’m going to live for me.

about

Suite: Sophie started life as a collection of songs I wrote for, and inspired by, the play Sophie which Geoff Blair and I created at my school in 1998. The play tells the story of a girl who eventually realises that her choice of boyfriend is not what she thought she needed to fill the hole left from her dysfunctional family.
The songs here represent many points of view - global, from Sophie, about Sophie and, possibly, one from her boyfriend - and each is part of the picture that makes up her persona. In my mind the character of Sophie has become far more complex since the play was written. In fact, the songs have revealed the almost schizophrenic nature she was unable to recognise.
The suite begins with Chain, a simple song with an idealistic view of friendship such as Sophie might hope is true for her. This is followed by 2 Sides To The Story which has a different view of friendship seeking solutions to the many dilemmas that arise among ‘friends’.
Small Points describes Sophie’s relationship with her mother. It contains some seriously warped imagery which show the doubts inside Sophie - is it her sick mother or herself who is the cause of the breakdown?, is Sophie able to see reality when attempting to communicate?, is she as insane as her life appears to be? - the final lines cement the break. Don’t Cry, Sophie, Cry tries to convey the outcomes of these doubts. It signals the start of her self-awareness and uncertainty of future.
Lingering could be the view of her ex-boyfriend. In the play he is a ‘gang’ leader - chauvinistic, rebellious and more concerned about status among his gang than in developing a relationship. He still wants her around but hasn’t the ability to see that she has changed and moved on. This song would be placed at the end of the play when Sophie rejects everything for which he stands. The song could also be read as Sophie’s view of herself when she was with the boyfriend - desperate to be wanted despite the pain involved, wanting him to change for her knowing the inevitable disappointment, wanting to please as well as wanting to break away.
Sophie is scared of what’s before her and revisits the damage she feels she created in The Sun Is Crying. She takes responsibility for the most profound things in her world until she remembers childhood laughter. This sparks her ability to grow. She is still most uncertain and fears her self-control and emotional state in Something Comes Along. This is a song which also shows her two sides discussing the issues with each other.
Moving On shows the growth of independence developing inside her mind. However, there’s still a lingering touch of procrastination.
I Am [Persona II] is the final song in the suite. Persona is a poem I wrote prior to all of this. I used aspects of the poem when writing the lyrics for this song giving both forms an extra angle. I’m not sure whether Sophie is talking to the world at large, the people from whom she is escaping, or her own inner demons. At first it was written as a message to her ex-boyfriend. In hindsight, I feel it’s more about herself - she is exorcising the insecure (if self-centred), troubled soul she was, to allow her clearer thinking and more positive side to emerge. She is secure with her fallibility.
Is Sophie successful in her quest to be a truly independent person in society? I’d like to think so.
